DIY Home Decor...

Hi Friends,

I want to start a mini series on moving out! I moved out August 2014, which sounds like a long time ago but actually it's about a year and a half. I love living alone and I want to do a few posts on tips for moving out, ways to make your house feel like a home and this one which is DIY free home decor!

Once you've moved house or moved out of your parents home your bank account will be in a state of despair. I want to share with you a few ways I decorated my flat without spending any money at all!

1 - DIY Art

You don't have to go out and buy expensive canvas paintings to decorate your home. I used cards that my friends have given me over the years and put them in wooden IKEA frames my mum bought me for Christmas. I painted the frames different colours so that they wouldn't all look boring and VOILA! New decoration :)

2 - Milk Bottle Vase

When I was first given flowers I had no vase to put them in, it just wasn't something I thought of purchasing. I now have some vases in my cupboard, but I also use old milk bottles or mason jars as vases.

3 - Use your possessions as decorations

I'm a big fan of not actually going out and buying ornaments as decorations, but using what I already have. I have a large shelving unit in my office which I've decorated with books, soft toys, perfumes, candles etc. and this way I don't NEED to go out and buy a fancy glass ornament!

4 - Re-use old jars and decorate with food!

This one may sound a bit odd, but I have reused LOTS of old honey jars and filled them with granola, flour, all sorts of ingredients and lined them up along the side in my kitchen. Obviously this is for decorative purposes, or I would have just kept them in their original container, but I really like displaying ingredients like this and obviously it didn't cost me anything!

5 - All you need is pegs...

I posted about how to make a DIY Advent Calendar here and this is the finished result! All I did was glue pegs onto a piece of black card and now my parents have something to put up in their house which is personal and homemade. I already had these tiny pegs in my overflowing art drawers but obviously I do recognize that this isn't something everyone will have. They can be bought at hobby craft but alternatively you could just make your own collage of photos without the pegs!

There you go, a few ways to decorate your home without spending a single penny! I'm excited to share other home ideas with you, storage hacks, packing tips, moving tips... and many more. I hope you try some of these, even if you haven't just moved house, but for your bedroom.

Love & hugs,

  3. I've started collecting old jars and making my own jam. It's so much fun and I swear it's more delicious when it's home made. I love IKEA for that reason, it's sparks my creativity!

    1. Everything seems to be more delicious when home made... like minced pies! I hate the store ones but making my own was amazing! IKEA is one of the best stores for home stuff ever, I think half of my flat is probably from IKEA!

  5. These are all great ideas! I LOVE the one about the cards!! That's such an amazing idea! I never know what to do with cards once I get them but obviously I should be doing something like that! I love when people hang up a ton of frames so I need to start saving some cards!:)

    1. Well I started looking at mine and just thought they're so cute and nice. Sometimes I go to paperchase and if I LOVE a postcard then they're less than £1 so I buy them and use them as decor :) Glad you like the idea!

  8. The milk bottle vase is so cute! I love glass jars and bottles for flowers, they add a bit of personality into a room. I'm all for DIY art as well, it's a lot cheaper than buying prints!
